The new ’Therme Meran’ (spa building)

In the heart of the town, but nonetheless surrounded by a Mediterranean park landscape, you will find the new Therme Meran. For locals and guests alike, it is an oasis of relaxation and a place of well-being with many bubbling attractions. With a new innovative and positive atmosphere, created by the South Tyrolean acclaimed architect Matteo Thun, this place reflects cultural and spa traditions of Meran and interprets them in a new way. The Therme Meran has gone to great lengths to show the close connection between nature and culture in South Tyrol. The gardens of Castle Trauttmansdorff and the Touriseum in Meran

On an area of 12 hectares around Castle Trauttmansdorff, you will find plants from all over the world separated into four individual gardens: the sun gardens, the water and terrace gardens, the woodland gardens and the South Tyrolean landscapes. There are also eleven pavilions, created by different artists, which present important strategies of plant life. Attractions: grotto with multi-media show, geological mosaic, orchid house, Japanese garden. Restaurant and picnic area. The Botanic Gardens were awarded the most beautiful garden in Italy in 2005, and in 2006 as the number 6 garden in Europe. In the midst of these gardens stands Castle Trauttmansdorff, in which Empress Sissi stayed during a spa holiday in Meran. Today, the castle is a museum, which brings together near 200 years of moving Alpine tourism history, in many interesting ways.

Golf Club Lana

Embedded in one of the most enchanting European landscapes, right in the heart of the Alps and in the midst of orchards, only eight kilometres from Nals, you will find one of the many golf courses of South Tyrol. At Golf Club Lana, which runs just below the Brandis fortress ruins, you can link sport with enjoying nature: from one green to the next, nearly all year round! This beautiful golf course was designed by the renowned English golf course designer Michael Pinner, a former staff member of ‘Jack Niklaus Golfdesign’.

Lake Kaltern

Surrounded by vineyards, woodlands and moors, you will discover Lake Kaltern, embedded into a deep hollow space between the Mendel mountain range in the West and the Mitterberg mountain in the East. The lake gives the Kaltern region a charming touch. Due to the fact that it is only four metres deep, it is the warmest bathing lake in the Alpine region and is appreciated by many swimmers, wind surfers and sailors. In addition, it can be used for ice-skating during the winter months.

Messner Mountain Museum Firmian

This museum is part of Castle Sigmundskron near Bozen. Beside its history as a fortress, the world-famous extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner uses it mostly for to show off mountain arts and explain climbing history. During a circular walk with exhibitions and six towers, in which he speaks about the creation, majesty and conquests in the mountains, visitors can gain some insight into the mountainous world. Combining arts, religion and other impressions, Reinhold Messner and the congenial architect Werner Tscholl were able to create a work of art, which truly is second to none. In many ways unique and a must-see!

’Ötzi’ – the Ice-Man

More than 5,300 years ago, a man walked up into the icy heights of the Schnals Valley glaciers and died there in mysterious circumstances. In 1991, German tourists discovered him by chance. The unique glacier mummy with his clothes and tools turned out to be an archaeological world sensation and as a unique snap shot of mankind during the Copper Age! After many years of researching the mummy through a highly specialised research team, the internationally renowned ice-man is exhibited with his tools in the South Tyrolean Archaeological Museum in Bozen.

Via Claudia Augusta – The only emperor road across the Alps

The antique Roman road Via Claudia Augusta, which leads from the plain around the river Po and the Adriatic Sea to the river Danube, still exists today. After 2,000 years of history, it is now experiencing a new era as cycle track. With the end of the conflicts and a Europe, which finally was united, the Via Claudia Augusta became a bridge between cultures, habitats and emotions. The road is a symbol of landscapes and traditions, artful master pieces and eno-gastronomic specialities from various nations, as well as a sign of human, young and environmentally friendly tourism. The road, which runs right through the village of Nals with its vineyards and orchards, invites you to leave your watch at home.
