Sirmian

Passing Castle Schwanburg, the road on your right leads up to Unter- and Obersirmian. You can drive on this road until you come to the Rainerhof (1,000 metres above sea level), which is the highest farmhouse in Obersirmian.

The hamlet of Sirmian belonged to Tisens until 1964 and was then incorporated into Nals. It covers an area of 480 hectares and offers great fresh air (particularly in late summer), as a result of its special location.
Untersirmian (687 metres above sea level) is still part of the orchard and vineyard region. Here the wonderful Sirmian white wine grows, mostly processed from Pinot Bianco grapes. Through the long ripening times of the grapes, this white wine has a mild and fruity character.
Just before you come to Untersirmian, the road passes Castle Payersberg. Untersirmian consists of a number of farmhouses, which are grouped around the Heart of Jesus chapel.

Particulary worth seeing is the road up to Obersirmian. It leads you through some woodlands and into the mountains. A short walk to the Saint Apollonia chapel (950 metres above sea level) offers you great panoramic views: in the south, you can see the Dolomites with the Langkofel mountain, the Schlern mountain, the Rosengarten, Latermar mountain, Zanggen mountain, as well as the White and Black Horn. On the opposite side of the valley, you see the Tschöggelberg with the villages of Mölten and Vöran and the Sarner Scharte. Towards the North-East, there is the granite cone of the Ifingerspitze and in the north the Texel Group with the Tschigat mountain and the Lodner Peak. From the North-West you are greeted by the Laugenspitzen and in the West, you will find the Mendel mountain range, which leads to the steep rocks of the Gantkofel.
The red-coloured reflection of the Tschöggel mountain shows its consitence of porphyry stone, which runs along the entire mountain between Jenesien and Hafling. A geologically interesting fact is, that on your side of the valley, the porphyry reaches only up to Untersirmian, while above that you can see the layers of mar and limestone. Sometimes, in the rivers around Obersirmian, you can find snail and mussle fossils.
If you are hungry, there are two pub-restaurants in Orbesirmian. One is called Apollonia and is found just below the Saint Apollonia chapel. The other one is called Jäger. Both will have something to offer and to strengthen you on your hiking trip. On the opposite side of the Sirmian river canyon, you will find the hamlet of Pitzon, which is at about the same height as Untersirmian. Pitzon has some vineyards and orchards and towards the edge of the forest, you will come across some large chestnut trees, from which you can harvest very tasty chestnuts in autumn time. Roasted chestnuts and new wine are part of the Törggele experience. In Pitzon, you can rest at the Bittnerhof.
