Nals Personalities

Father Dr. Gregor Gasser

The most outstanding figure in Nals is without doubt the Salvatorian Father Dr. Gregor Gasser. He was priest, preacher, author and musician and developed his main activity between 1901 and 1912 as a counsellor in Vienna. Even then, he represented the rights of the youth and the working classes. He was known as a pioneer of social ideas, which supported peaceful living together for all human beings. Josef Gasser was born on 5th October 1868 in Nals. His father was a son of the Bittner farmhouse, his mother a daughter of the Flieher family. After eight years at elementary school in Nals, he transferred in 1882 to the Franciscan Grammar school in Bozen, where he passed his A-levels in 1890. During the same year, he moved to Rome in order to enter the newly founded Salvatorian Order. He studied theology at the Papal university “Gregoriana”, together with Eugenio Pacelli who became Pope Pius XII. On 7th August 1895, Josef Gasser received his doctorate in theology. On 31st March 1895, he had taken the holy orders in the Lateran basilica and received his name Gregor.
At the early age of 27, he was awarded the position of headmaster in the Roman mother house. He was mainly dedicated to the education of its students, edited religious magazines, held lectures and preached.
In 1901, Father Gregor was transferred to Vienna, where he worked as a catechist and youth counsellor. In the 10th district, which was mainly occupied by working class families, he developed his work as a legal counsellor for the working classes, founded workers’ associations and supported people who could not find work.
When he became ill in 1912, the physicians sent him to rest in the spa town of Meran. However, on 27th May 1913, he died there after suffering from an incurable illness. The village of Nals honoured this man by re-naming one part of the Andreas Hofer Street into Dr. Gregor Gasser Street.
