The trails and paths lead you through vineyards and orchards, chestnut groves and mixed woodland, across green mountain meadows and through conifer forests up to the Alpine rose fields. Some of the paths are steep, but they are kept in good condition by the local Alpine club and they are well marked.
Route 1: Castle hiking trips Nals – Obersirmian – Grissian – Prissian – Nals.
Total length: approx. 15 kms
Description: From the Nals tourist office, you walk towards the Goldgasse. On the left-hand side beside the bakery the Nachtigallenweg begins. Pass Castle Payersberg and walk in the direction of Obersirmian. Once you arrive there, you will enjoy a wonderful panoramic view across the Etsch Valley and towards the Dolomite mountains. When you arrive at the restaurant Apollonia, you will see the small Saint Apollonia Church on a forested hill. The church was built during the 13th Century. Near the car park, you turn onto a small path, which leads you ascending in the direction of St. Jakob. Passing the Saint Jacob’s Church (frescoes from the 12th Century), you walk towards Grissian and then to Prissian and Castle Katzenzungen. There you will find Europe’s largest and oldest vine. Follow path number 2 until you reach the Pfeffersburg ruins and then walk back to Nals.

Route 2: Nals – Gaid – Nals
Total length: approx. 10 kms
Description: From the Bittner snack bar just above Nals, you take the Larchsteig (hiking trail number R) in the direction of Gaid. Then follow hiking trail number 8 to restaurant Jäger in Obersirmian. From here, take walking route number 9 towards Untersirmian and you will arrive at your starting point.
